When you are poor, your kith and kin leave you.
廉蔺门易轨，
Lin’s hangers-on betrayed and turned to Lian;
田窦相夺移。
Dou’s hangers-on betrayed and turned to Tian.
晨风集茂林，
The falcons fly to lush woods in spring breeze,
栖鸟去枯枝。
When autumn comes, they leave the arid trees.
今我唯困蒙，
Now that I get into a serious plight,
群士所背驰。
The gentlemen have all stayed out of sight.
乡人敦懿义，
The villagers, however, welcome me,
济济荫光仪。
Respecting me and holding feasts in glee.
对宾颂有客，
They dine and wine me as an honoured guest
举觞咏露斯。
And toast to me and wish me all the best.
临乐何所叹，
At present, this is what I have to say:
素丝与路歧。
No one can tell what luck he’ll have today.
