Slowly comes to my gate with a load.
人马风尘色，
From his weather-beaten skin and face,
知从河塞还。
I know that he comes from the border place.
时我有同栖，
He calls to my mind my beloved man,
结宦游邯郸。
Who runs official errands to Handan.
将不异客子，
The traveller is treated as an honoured guest,
分饥复共寒。
Who shares the cold and hunger with the rest.
烦君尺帛书，
I ask him to bring a letter for me,
寸心从此殚。
In which I bare my heart for him to see.
遣妾长憔悴，
The letter says, “You make me pine away,
岂复歌笑颜。
With no smile on my face from day to day.
檐隐千霜树，
The thousand-year tree in the court has died;
庭枯十载兰。
The ten-year orchid in the yard has dried.
经春不举袖，
If you don’t gather flowers in spring days,
秋落宁复看？
What is left on trees in autumn phase?
一见愿道意，
Telling him to make retreat while he can.
君门已九关。
Even a prime minister may resign
虞卿弃相印，
Because the peaceful married life is fine.
担箜为同欢。
As lonely blooms fade at an early date,
闺阴欲早霜，
