万物并作,吾以观复。
and of the ten thousand things none but can be worked on by you.#2 I have beheld them, whither they go back.
夫物芸芸,各复归其根。
See, all things howsoever they flourish Return to the root from which they grew.
归根曰静,是曰复命。
This return to the root is called Quietness; quietness is called submission to Fate;
复命曰常,知常曰明。
what has submitted to Fate has become part of the always so.#2 To know the always-so is to be Illumined;
不知常,妄作凶。
not to know it, means to go blindly to disaster.
知常容,容乃公,公乃王,王乃天,天乃道,道乃久,没身不殆。
He who knows the always-so has room in him for everything; he who has room in him for everything is without prejudice.#2 To be without prejudice is to be kingly; to be kingly is to be of heaven; to be of heaven is to be in Tao. #3 Tao is forever and he that possess it, though his body ceases, is not destroyed.
