其所以不服者，大山在其南，殿山在其北，左洞庭之波，右彭蠡之川，因此險也，所以不服。
The reason for this was that they had Mount Tai to their south, Mount Dian to their north, the waves of Dongting to their left, and the streams of Pengli to their right.
禹欲伐之，舜不許，曰：「諭教猶未竭也。
It is because they relied on the rugged terrain of these areas that they did not submit.
」究諭教焉，而有苗氏請服。
Yu wished to launch a punitive campaign against them, but Shun would not consent to it, saying, “We have not yet used every possible means to teach them.” He then used every possible means to teach them, and the You Miao asked permission to be his vassals.
天下聞之，皆非禹之義，而歸舜之德。
When the people of the realm heard of this, they all blamed Yu for his lack of righteousness and attributed the Miao’s submission to Shun’s virtue.
