The duke brought the matter up with King Cheng, saying, “Has Your Majesty conferred a fief on Yu?” “That is just something I said in jest to Yu,” King Cheng replied.
“Your servant has heard,” replied the duke, “that the Son of Heaven does not speak in jest.
Once he speaks, the archivists record his words, the reciters chant them, and the men-of-service proclaim them.” He then enfeoffed Tang-shu Yu in Jin. Dan the Duke of Zhou can indeed be said to have been skillful in the use of words.
With but a single observation, he caused King Cheng to take greater care in speech, gave expression to the love extended by older to younger brothers, and strengthened the foundations of the royal house.
