According to Prince Xian of Hejian, Guanzi made a saying that goes, “When the granaries are full, the people know propriety and righteousness; when food and clothing are sufficient, the people are aware of shame and glory.” Grain, let us note, is what enables a state to thrive; it is what enables young men and woman to be strong and attractive; it is what enables propriety and righteousness to be practiced; and it is what enables people’s hearts to be at rest.
