」中牟之士皆與之。
Arriving late, he raised the hem of his robe so as to be ready for the cauldron and said, “I have heard that a man of principle will decline to use an officer’s carriage and headdress, though they be placed before his eyes, if by so doing he would violate what is right, and that he will die for principle even though the executioner’s axe stands at his back.” With this he lifted the hem of his robe and made for the cauldron. Bi Xi stopped him with a gesture.
城北餘子田基獨後至,袪衣將入鼎,曰:「基聞之,義者軒冕在前,非義弗乘,斧鉞於後,義死不避。
When Zhao Jianzi [later] laid waste to Zhongmou, he found Tian Ji and had him detained.
」遂袪衣,將入鼎。
佛肸播而止之。
When the time came to discuss the degrees of merit achieved in the campaign, he placed Tian foremost on the list.
趙簡子屠中牟,得而取之,論有功者,用田基為始。
Tian Ji said, “I have heard that a scrupulous officer does not cause others to suffer shame.
田基曰:「吾聞廉士不恥人,如此而受中牟之功,則中牟之士終身慚矣。
If I accept this recognition of merit in the Zhongmou campaign, the officers of the town will suffer shame for the rest of their lives.” He then strapped his mother to his back and traveled south to Chu.
」遂襁負其母,南徙於楚。
楚王高其義,待以司馬。
The Chu king held him in high regard as a man of principle and welcomed him to the state by conferring upon him the rank of army marshal.
