楚王問莊辛曰：「君子之行，奈何？

The king of Chu asked Zhuang Xin, “How does a man of quality behave?” “Though he does not put walls around his dwelling,” said Zhuang Xin, “others cannot destroy or damage his holdings; though he goes about without attendants to protect him, others cannot assault or injure him— this is the way a man of quality behaves.” “How does a man of quality behave when he is well-off?” pursued the king.

」莊辛對曰：「居不為垣牆，人莫能毀傷；行不從周衛，人莫能暴害。

“When a man of quality is well-off and loans money to others,” replied Zhuang Xin, “he does not blame others if they do not feel gratitude for his magnanimity; and, when he gives food and drink to others, he does not order them about or impose tasks on them.

此君子之行也。

」楚王復問：「君子之富，奈何？

His relations love him, people at large admire him, and the unworthy serve him.

」對曰：「君子之富，假貸人，不德也，不責也；其食飲人，不使也，不役也。

All hope that he will enjoy long life and happiness, and suffer no misfortunes.

親戚愛之，眾人善之，不肖者事之，皆欲其壽樂而不傷於患，此君子之富也。

」楚王曰：「善。」

This is how a man of quality behaves when he is well-off.” “Finely observed!” said the king of Chu.
