When Tian Ji quit Qi and fled to Chu, the king of Chu met him in the outskirts of the capital, led him to a visitors’ hostel, and said to him, “Chu is a ten-thousand-chariot state, and Qi is also a ten-thousandchariot state.

常欲相并，為之奈何？

Each harbors the desire to annex the other; what is to be done about this?” “That’s easy to see,” Tian Ji replied.

“If Qi makes Shen Ru its general, then Chu will send forth fifty thousand troops under its supreme commander, who will at length return with the enemy general’s head.

」對曰：「易知耳。

If Qi makes Tian Ju its general, then Chu will send forth twenty-five thousand troops under its supreme commander, and the two forces will each withdraw [without a victory].

齊使申孺將，則楚發五萬人，使上將軍將之，至禽將軍首而反耳；齊使田居將，則楚發二十萬人，使上將軍將之，分別而相去也；齊使眄子將，則楚悉發四封之內，王自出將而忌從，相國、上將軍為左右司馬，如是則王僅得存耳。」

If Qi makes Mianzi its general, then Chu will send forth all the forces of its feudatories; Your Majesty will be in general command with me in attendance, while the prime minister and the supreme commander will act as marshals of the left and right respectively.
