保申諫曰：「先王卜以臣為保吉。
Upon obtaining a beauty from Dan, he surrendered to carnal pleasure and did not hold court for an entire year.
今王得如黃之狗，箘簬之矰，畋於雲夢，三月不反；得丹之姬，淫，朞年不聽朝；王之罪當笞，匍伏！
Tutor Shen admonished him about it, saying, “The former king made a prognostication that indicated that it would be auspicious for me to be made a tutor.
將笞王！
Now, having obtained the dog Ru Huang and arrows made of jun and lu bamboo, you used them to go hunting in Yunmeng and did not return for three months; then, after obtaining a beauty from Dan, you lost yourself in pleasure and did not hold court for an entire year.
」王曰：「不穀免於襁褓，託於諸侯矣，願請變更而無笞。
Your Majesty’s offenses merit a beating.
」保申曰：「臣承先王之命，不敢廢。
Get down on the floor; I am going to beat Your Majesty.” “I am no longer a babe in swaddling clothes,” said the king.
王不受笞，是廢先王之命也。
“I am ranked among the lords of states.
臣寧得罪於王，無負於先王。
I hope you will change the punishment to something else and not use beating.” “I received my orders from our former king,” said Tutor Shen, “and dare not put them aside.
」王曰：「敬諾。
If Your Majesty does not undergo a beating, I shall be putting aside the orders of our former king.
」乃席王，王伏。
It is better that I should give offense to Your Majesty than that I should prove ungrateful to our former king.” “I respectfully consent,” said the king.
保申束細箭五十，跪而加之王背，如此者再，謂王「起矣！
Tutor Shen spread a mat on the floor and the king crouched on it.
」王曰：「有笞之名一也。
Tutor Shen then tied fifty thin bamboo strips together, knelt down, and placed them on the king’s back.
遂致之。
He did this twice, then said to the king, “You may now get up!” “Since I am now known as one who has endured a beating,” said the king, “you should go ahead and deliver one.” “I have heard,” said Tutor Shen, “that a man of quality is ashamed of a beating and that a petty person thinks it painful.
」保申曰：「臣聞之，君子恥之，小人痛之。
恥之不變，痛之何益？」
If being ashamed of it does not produce change, what good will be achieved by pain?
