」常摐曰:「過故鄉而下車,子知之乎?
」老子曰:「過故鄉而下車,非謂其不忘故邪?
Do you have no instructions to leave for your disciples?” Chang Zong said, “I would have spoken to you even if you hadn’t asked.” Then he said, “Getting down from one’s carriage when passing by one’s old home district—do you know what that means?” Laozi said, “Getting down from one’s carriage when passing by one’s old home district—doesn’t that mean ‘not forgetting old friends’?” “Ah, you have it!” said Chang Zong.
」常摐曰:「嘻!
是已。
Then he said, “Hurrying when passing by a lofty tree—do you know what that means?” Laozi said, “Hurrying when passing by a lofty tree—doesn’t that mean ‘respecting your elders’?” “Ah, you have it!” Chang Zong said.
」常摐曰:「過喬木而趨,子知之乎?
」老子曰:「過喬木而趨,非謂其敬老耶?
Then he opened his mouth wide and showed it to Laozi, saying, “Is my tongue still there?” “Yes,” said Laozi.
」常摐曰:「嘻!
是已。
“Are my teeth still there?” Chang Zong asked.
」張其口而示老子曰:「吾舌存乎?
」老子曰:「然。
“They are gone,” said Laozi.
」「吾齒存乎?
」老子曰:「亡。
“Do you know what that means?” Chang Zong asked.
」常摐曰:「子知之乎?
」老子曰:「夫舌之存也,豈非以其柔耶?
Laozi said, “Is it not true that the tongue survives because it is soft, and the teeth perish because they are hard?” “Ah, you have it,” said Chang Zong.
齒之亡也,豈非以其剛耶?
」常摐曰:「嘻!
“You understand everything in the realm.
是已。
天下之事已盡矣,何以復語子哉!」
What need is there to speak further?
