“Withdraw!
It is wine!” Zifan repeated.
“It is not wine,” insisted Guyang.
Zifan then accepted what Guyang had brought and drank it, after which he was drunk and took to his bed.
King Gong wanted to fight again and sent a person to summon Zifan, but Zifan excused himself, saying that he was suffering from a heart ailment.
King Gong thereupon went with his entourage to see him.
On entering Zifan’s tent, he smelled the aroma of wine and said, “In today’s battle, I myself suffered an injury.
I placed my reliance on you, marshal, but now you have reduced yourself to this sorry state.
You are causing my state to perish and showing no pity to my multitudes.
I now have nothing with which to do battle!” He then had Zifan executed and had the corpse publicly exhibited.
Then he recalled his troops.
When Guyang presented wine to Zifan, one may say that he was not acting out of spite but out of true loyalty; nevertheless, what he did was sufficient to kill Zifan. Thus, it is said that “loyalty in small matters is the assassin of loyalty in great matters” and that “profit in small matters destroys the possibility of profit in great matters.
