Known for his skill in making speeches, he held a position among the court officers and was often sent as an emissary to the courts of various princes.
When the reign of Gaozu began, the central plain had just been brought under control, and Zhao Tuo, having pacified Yue in the south, became the king of that region. Gaozu therefore had Lu Jia go there to confer an emblem of Han authority upon him so that he might become the Han prince of South Yue.
When Master Lu arrived, Zhao Tuo received him squatting, with his legs spread wide.
