晏子將使荊，荊王聞之，謂左右曰：「晏子，賢人也，今方來，欲辱之，何以也？
」左右對曰：「為其來也，臣請縛一人過王而行。
」王曰：『何為者？
』對曰：『齊人也。
』王曰：『何坐？
』曰：『坐盜。
』」於是荊王與晏子立語，有縛一人過王而行。
王曰：「何為者也？
Once, when Yanzi was about to come as an emissary to the court of Jing [Chu], the king of Jing heard of it and said to his retinue, “Yanzi is a worthy man. I would like to have him insulted when he comes.
」對曰：「齊人也。
」王曰：「何坐？
」曰：「坐盜。
」王曰：「齊人固盜乎？
」晏子反顧之曰：「江南有橘，樹之於江北，生不為橘乃為枳。
所以然者何？
其土地使之然也。
今齊人居齊不盜，來之荊而盜，得無土地使之然乎？
」荊王曰：「吾欲傷子，而反自中也。」
