The king of Chu had one of his officers speak to him in jest, saying, “Did you make a prognostication before you came here?” “Yes,” said the emissary.
」「卜之謂何?
“What was the result?” the officer asked.
」對曰:「吉!
“It was auspicious,” said the emissary.
」楚人曰:「噫!
“Oh, but that’s preposterous,” said the officer.
甚矣,子之國無良龜也!
“Your state must lack good turtle plastrons!
王方殺子以釁鍾,其吉如何?」
The king is going to kill you so that your blood can be smeared on our bells [used in directing troops].
How could that be auspicious?
