懼諸侯之畏己也，乃築為五仞之臺。
Fearing that the various lords would be overawed at his might, he had a thirty-five-foot tower constructed and invited the lords to a wine banquet there upon its completion. The lords all sought to ally themselves with him.
臺成而觴諸侯。
諸侯請約。
King Zhuang said, “I am a person of meager virtue.” The lords all drank to his health.
莊王曰：「我薄德之人也。
King Zhuang, emptying his cup and gazing upward, said, “An imposing tower—let my schemes be deep and secret.
」諸侯請為觴，乃仰而曰：「將將之臺，窅窅其謀。
If I have spoken amiss, you gentlemen may attack me.” After this, rulers of distant states came to pay court visits, and rulers of nearby states were treated as honored guests.
我言而不當，諸侯伐之。
」於是遠者來朝，近者入賓。
