When Shu Xiang148 was seeking a way to kill Chang Hong, he met with him a number of times in the Zhou court and then pretended to let slip a letter that said, “I, Chang Hong, say to Shu Xiang: ‘If you will raise a force to attack Zhou, I will remove the Liu clan chief 150 from power and establish the Shan clan chief 151 in his place.’” The Liu clan chief brought the matter up with the Zhou king, saying, “It was Chang Hong who wrote this letter.” The king thereupon had Chang Hong killed.
