於是王壽夢薨，謁以位讓季子，季子終不肯當。
The eldest was named Ye, the next Yu Zhai, the next Yi Mei, and the youngest Ji Zha.
謁乃為約曰：「季子賢，使國及季子，則吳可以興。
Ji Zha was also known as Jizi of Yanling.
He was the worthiest of the four, and his three elder brothers were all aware of this.
乃兄弟相繼。
When King Shou Meng died, Ye wanted to yield the throne to Jizi, but he steadfastly refused to accept.
」飲食必祝曰：「使吾早死，令國及季子。
Ye thereupon made an agreement [with his brothers], saying, “Jizi is the worthiest among us.
」謁死，餘祭立；餘祭死，夷昧立；夷昧死，次及季子。
If the state comes into his hands, Wu can flourish.
So let the succession pass from brother to brother, from the eldest to the youngest.” When eating or drinking, he would always utter a prayer, saying, “If I should die early, let the state pass to Jizi.” When Ye died, the throne passed to Yu Zhai; when Yu Zhai died, the throne passed to Yi Mei; and, when Yi Mei died, Jizi became eligible for the succession, but he was at that time journeying elsewhere and was not at home.
季子時使行，不在。
Liao, his elder brother by a lesser consort, said, “I too am an elder brother.” He accordingly assumed the throne of Wu himself.
庶兄僚曰：「我亦兄也。
When Jizi returned from his journey, he resumed serving the throne as before.
」乃自立為吳王。
Guang, the son of Ye, said, “According to my father’s intention, the throne should pass to Jizi, but, according to the laws of inheritance, I am the one in line and should be the current king.
What has Liao got to do with this?” He thereupon had Zhuan Zhu17 stab Liao, killing him, and then offered the throne to Jizi.
