Guan Zhong66 and Xi Peng67 came to the palace gate with a host of officers and followers.

Lord Huan asked, “What do you intend to do with this host?” “I have heard,” said Guan Zhong, “that, when it rains, notable events will transpire.
」遂興師伐之。
I have observed that Chaoling has not been able to withstand the rains—I beg leave to attack.” “Excellent proposal!” exclaimed Lord Huan. He then raised troops for an attack.
既至,天卒間外,士在內矣,桓公曰:「其有聖人乎?
On arriving at the city, he saw a great horde of troops lying in concealment outside with men-at-arms arrayed inside.
」乃還旗而去之。
“Is there a sage among them?!” he exclaimed.
He then reversed his banners and went back.
