Wherever the Way exists, the realm submits to it; wherever virtue exists, the realm prizes it; wherever empathy exists, the realm loves it; wherever principled action exists, the realm stands in awe of it.
屋漏者民去之,水淺者魚逃之,樹高者鳥宿之,德厚者士趨之,有禮者民畏之,忠信者士死之。
When a house is leaky, people abandon it; when water is shallow, fish flee from it; when a tree is tall, birds nest there; when a person’s virtue is deep, men-of-service flock to him; when a person acts in accordance with the rites, the people hold him in esteem; when a person is loyal and keeps his word, men-of-service die for him.
衣雖弊,行必脩;頭雖亂,言必治。
Though one’s clothes may be ragged, one must walk like a cultivated man; though one’s mind is in disarray, one’s speech must be well ordered.
時在應之,為在因之。
One must respond to the times and act in accordance with conditions.
所伐而當,其福五之;所伐不當,其禍十之。
If the object of your attack is well chosen, the benefit will be increased fivefold; if the object of your attack is not well-chosen, the disaster entailed will be increased fivefold.
