心之得，萬物不足為也；心之失，獨心不能守也。
Once one’s heart obtains what it wishes, nothing in the world can shake it; when the heart loses what it desires, not even the heart itself will be able to hold firm.
子不孝，非吾子也；交不信，非吾友也。
If a son is not filial, he is not my son; if a friend is not trustworthy, he is not my friend.
食其口而百節肥，灌其本而枝葉茂；本傷者枝槁，根深者末厚。
When one feeds the mouth, all parts of the body will become filled out; when one waters the roots, the branches and leaves will flourish thickly.
為善者得道，為惡者失道。
When the roots are injured, the branches will be brittle; when the roots are deep, the crown will be thick.
惡語不出口，苟言不留耳。
One who does good obtains the Way; one who does evil loses the Way.
務偽不長，喜虛不久。
Evil speech should not issue from the mouth, and careless speech should not be retained by the ears.
義士不欺心，廉士不妄取。
One who cultivates what is false will not endure long; one who delights in what is empty will not last.
A principled man does not delude himself; an honest man does not accept goods carelessly.
以財為草，以身為寶。
Possessions are as grass to him, whereas his person is like a precious treasure.
慈仁少小，恭敬耆老。
He is compassionate and understanding with the young, and respectful and deferential to the aged.
犬吠不驚，命曰金城。
When dogs bark, he is not startled; this is called “ramparts of bronze”; he avoids perilous situations; this is called “freedom from regret.” When wealthy, he necessarily thinks of poverty; and, when young and strong, he necessarily thinks of old age.
常避危殆，命曰不悔。
Though young in years, he will be quick to anticipate such things.
富必念貧，壯必念老，年雖幼少，慮之必早。
People conversant with the rites, let us note, may die on each other’s behalf, and people not conversant with the rites may also die thus.
夫有禮者相為死，無禮者亦相為死。
Those in high positions make no appointments with pride; pride comes of itself.
貴不與驕期，驕自來；驕不與亡期，亡自至。
Those who are proud make no appointments with destruction; destruction comes of itself.
This saying refers to the respective responses of the man of quality and the petty man to the opportunities in question. “Grass” here stands for “that which is worthless.”
