Five things are a source of shame to a man of quality.
Failing to be honored with permission to sit in a court audience and not being invited to discourse at a banquet—of this he is ashamed.
To hold a position but not be able to speak in a way that addresses the issues facing him—of this he is ashamed.
To say things but fail to carry them out—of this he is ashamed.
To gain a thing only to lose it—of this he is ashamed.
The existence of privation among the people when he has more land than he needs—of this he is ashamed.
