聰明形則仁愛著、廉恥分矣。
When eyes and ears are keen, then empathy and love take shape, and honesty and shame become distinct.
故非其道而行之，雖勞不至；非其有而求之，雖強不得。
Thus, it can be seen that, if one treads improper paths, no amount of exertion will enable one to attain one’s goals; and, if one seeks that which is not properly one’s own, no amount of strength will suffice to procure it.
智者不為非其事，廉者不求非其有，是以遠容而名章也。
A wise man does not perform tasks that are not properly his own, and an honest man does not seek that which does not properly belong to him.
詩云：「不忮不求，何用不臧！
Thus, he is able to keep injury at a distance66 and make his name illustrious.
」此之謂也。
As is said in the Odes, “Not envious, not grasping, / How can he fail to be auspicious?” That sums it up.
