His disciples all had a starved appearance.
孔子歌兩柱之間。
Kongzi sang as he sat between two pillars.
子路入見曰:「夫子之歌,禮乎?
Zilu76 came to him and asked, “Is your singing in accord with the rites, master?” Kongzi made no response.
」孔子不應,曲終而曰:「由,君子好樂為無驕也;小人好樂為無懾也。
Upon finishing a song, he said, “You [personal name of Zilu], a man of quality likes music because it banishes arrogance; a petty man likes music because it banishes fear.
其誰知之子不我知而從我者乎?
Who could have known, young man, that you should wish to follow me even though you don’t understand me!” Unhappy at this, Zilu snatched up a pole and commenced dancing, not leaving till he had completed three pieces.
」子路不悅,援干而舞,三終而出。
Seven days passed, and Kongzi continued to practice music without cease.
及至七日,孔子修樂不休。
子路慍見曰:「夫子之修樂時乎?」
Zilu, troubled at this, came again to see Kongzi and asked, “Is this practice of music timely, master?
