」程本子曰:「乃君子否,子何事焉?
」南瑕子曰:「吾聞君子上比,所以廣德也;下比,所以狹行也。
“I have heard,” said Nan Xiazi, “that men of quality don’t eat baby fish.” “Men of quality?” asked Benzi.
比於善,自進之階也;比於惡,自退之原也。
“What does that have to do with you?” “I have heard,” said Xiazi, “that, when men of quality pattern themselves on their their betters, they thereby broaden their virtue and that, when they pattern themselves on their inferiors, they thereby grow narrower in their behavior.
詩云:『高山仰止,景行行止。
Patterning oneself on the good is a stairway to improvement; patterning oneself on the bad is a cause of regression. As is said in the Odes, ‘High peaks are made for gazing upward; / Great roads are made for traveling.’130 How could I presume to consider myself a man of quality?
』吾豈敢自以為君子哉,志向之而已。
」孔子曰:「見賢思齊焉,見不賢而內自省。」
