」孔子曰：「無也。
“No,” replied Kongzi.
君子之修其行，未得，則樂其意；既已得，又樂其知。
“When a man of quality cultivates his behavior but fails to gain a position, he is happy at his own grasp of things; having gained a position, he is happy at his own wisdom.
是以有終身之樂，無一日之憂。
Thus, he is happy throughout his life and doesn’t experience so much as a single day’s distress.
小人則不然，其未之得，則憂不得；既已得之，又恐失之。
A petty person is not like this.
是以有終身之憂，無一日之樂。」
When not yet possessed of a position, he is distressed at his failure to obtain one; and, after gaining a position, he is distressed at the possibility of losing it.
Thus, he is laden with care throughout his life and doesn’t experience so much as a single day’s happiness.
