To enjoy special favors when occupying positions of importance and to monopolize power while regarding the worthy with suspicion—these are the innate characteristics of stupid people; they are vainglorious in their aims and pay no heed to past grievances.

志驕傲而輕舊怨。

This is why they are invariably exposed to peril on attaining high position, why they invariably go to ruin when their responsibilities are heavy, and why they invariably meet with disgrace on showing themselves to be fond of special favors.” “Paying no heed to past grievances” makes little sense in context.

是以尊位則必危，任重則必崩，擅寵則必辱。」
