故君子居人間則治，小人居人間則亂。
Thus, when a man of quality lives in the midst of a group of people, they will coexist in good order; but, when a petty person lives in the midst of others, they will fall into disorder.
君子欲和人，譬猶水火不相能然也，而鼎在其間，水火不亂，乃和百味。
A man of quality’s desire to bring others into harmony can be compared with the case of fire and water: they are mutually incompatible, but, when a cooking vessel is placed between them, the fire and water, instead of being in disorder, will act in concert to create the hundred flavors.
是以君子不可不慎擇人在其間。
This is why a man of quality cannot but be careful in choosing the groups he dwells with.
