A passage in the Changes says, “Gazing upward so as to observe the patterns in the heavens and gazing downward so as to inspect the configurations of the earth—these are surely the means by which one may come to understand the causes behind the existence of all things visible and hidden.” Once the congruence of heavenly patterns and terrestrial configurations with human circumstances is lodged securely in the heart, the heart, one may observe, will then turn into a storehouse of sagely wisdom.
