When, attired in a rough hempen cloak and sash and grasping the gnarled staff of heavy mourning, he stands in a mourning procession or pays his respects to the family of the deceased, there is nothing in his demeanor that does not express sorrow.
When, attired in armor and helmet, he sounds the drums of war, there are none among his officers and men who do not take courage.
Thus, his empathy is sufficient to embrace the Hundred Clans; his courage is sufficient to stabilize a tottering state; his trustworthiness is sufficient to draw the territorial rulers to his side; his strength is sufficient to ward off calamity; and his authority is sufficient to command the three armies of a state.
Hence, it is said, ‘Seemly driving to the left and seemly to the right; nothing ever is unseemly in the deportment of a man of quality.” That expresses the matter well.
