When King Cheng21 was about to be capped, the Duke of Zhou22 had Intoner Yong23 address a prayer to the royal ancestors on his behalf, saying, “Let your words accomplish their aim but not be numerous.” Addressing the spirits, Intoner Yong said, “Let the king be close to the people and far from flatterers; let him cherish time and be generous in dispensing wealth; and let him employ the worthy and entrust tasks to the capable.
