射者必心平體正，持弓矢，審固，然後射者，能以中。
詩云：「大侯既抗，弓矢斯張。
射夫既同，獻爾發功。
」此之謂也。
弧之為言豫也。
An archer must have a calm heart and an erect stance and, when grasping the bow and arrow, must have a steady gaze in order to hit his target.
豫者，豫吾意也。
故古者兒生三日，桑弧蓬矢六，射天地四方。
天地四方者，男子之所有事也。
必有意其所有事，然後敢食穀。
故曰：「不素飧兮」。
此之謂也。
A passage in the Odes says, “The target is set up; / the bows are all stretched out. / The archers are all formed / To offer up their skills.
