“Then why,” said the king, looking angry, “does a person cast aside his parents to serve a ruler?” “If it were not for the ruler’s land,” replied Tian Guo, “we would have no place to provide a dwelling for our parents.
」田過對曰：「非君之土地，無以處吾親；非君之祿，無以養吾親；非君之爵位，無以尊顯吾親。
If it were not for the stipends provided by the ruler, we would have nothing to support our parents; if it were not for the official titles conferred by the ruler, we would have nothing to do honor to our parents.
受之君，致之親。
What we receive from the ruler, we give to our parents.
凡事君，所以為親也。
」宣王邑邑而無以應。
Whatever service we provide to the ruler is done so that we may serve our parents.” The king looked gloomy but was unable to make a reply.
