」韓子曰:「吾不為人之惡我而改吾志。
不為我將死而改吾義。
」言未已,舟泆然行。
“Just now I told you clearly what you should do,” said the boatman, “but you wouldn’t listen. Now the boat is spinning about—it’s very dangerous.
韓褐子曰:「詩云:『莫莫葛藟,施於條枚。
愷悌君子,求福不回。
』鬼神且不回,況於人乎?」
Maybe you should collect your things, get out, and swim.” Hánhezi said, “I do not change my aims because a person hates me and do not alter my principles because I am about to die.” Before he had finished speaking, the boat righted itself and went smoothly on. “In the Odes,” said Hánhezi, “a passage says, ‘Flourishing are the vines, / They spread to every branch. / Comely is my lord; / he seeks blessing without swerving.’77 If even the spirits don’t swerve, how can men do so?
