」公孟不知，以告曾子。
曾子愀然逡巡曰：「大哉言乎！
Those whose outer manner is severe, it is said, must assuredly suffer internal distress; and those who are fond of victory and feel they are in the right are sure to become servants of others.
夫外厲者必內折，色勝而心自取之者必為人役。
是故君子德行成而容不知，聞識博而辭不爭，知慮微達而能不愚。」
That is why a man of quality is able to perfect his virtue yet betray no sign of this in his countenance, is able to acquire extensive knowledge without becoming argumentative, and is able to know both the subtle and the great without being made to play the fool.” The Dying Words of Zengzi
