These were the instruments used in temples to make sacrifice to the former kings; they were also the instruments used for reciprocal toasting between hosts and guests at banquets; and they were the means by which higher and lower positions at court were appropriately differentiated and could be used to demonstrate to later generations that ordered gradations of rank and seniority exist.
