Once, when consulting with Laozi, Kongzi said, “Extreme indeed is the difficulty, these days, of putting the Way into practice.

吾比執道委質以當世之君，而不我受也。

I have offered up the Way to all the rulers of the present era, but they have not accepted my proposals.

道之於今難行也。

It is hard indeed to promote the Way these days.” Laozi said, “Persuaders, let us note, are fluent with arguments, and those who listen to them are thrown into confusion by their words.

」老子曰：「夫說者流於聽，言者亂於辭。

如此二者，則道不可委矣。」

When these two conditions prevail, it is impossible to put the Way into a ruler’s keeping.
