Subsequently some fellow disciples sent me individually what they could remember.
洪择其切于问正者,合所私录,得若干条。
I selected those that had to do with questions presented to our Teacher for correction, and combined them with what I had recorded, and got a certain number of items.
居吴时,将与文录并刻矣。
When I stayed at Wu, I was about to publish them together with the Wen-lu.
适以忧去,未遂当是时也,四方讲学日众,师门宗旨既明,若无事于赘刻者,故不复萦念。
I left Wu because of a death in the family and therefore did not succeed in publishing them.At that time more and more followers lectured on our Teacher's doctrines in all parts of the country, the fundamental doctrines of our school had been clarified, and it appeared that any publication would be superfluous.I therefore no longer thought of it.
去年,同门曾子汉得洪手抄复傍为采辑,名曰遗言,以刻行于荆。
Last year a fellow disciple, Mr. Tseng Ts'ai-han, got hold of my manuscript, collected more sayings on the side, and published it in Ching-chou under the title I-yen.
洪读之,觉当时采录精,乃为删其重,削去芜蔓存其三分之一,名曰《传习续录》,复刻于宁国之水西精舍。
I read it and felt that the selection was not refined.I therefore eliminated the repetitions and discarded the unimportant, kept a third of it, and published it at the Shui-hsi Academy in Ning-kuo under the title CPuan-hsi hsii-lu .
今年夏,洪来游蕲,沈君思畏曰:“师门之教久行于四方,而独未及于蕲。
In the summer of this year I came here to Ch'i-chou.Mr. Shen Ssu-wei said to me, “The teachings of oux Teacher's school have for a long time prevailed in all parts of the country except in Ch'i-chou.
蕲之士得读遗言若亲灸夫子之教,指见良知,若重睹日月之光。
Those scholars of Ch'i-chou who have been able to read the I-jen of the Teacher felt as if they had received instructions from him personally, which pointed the way to them and led them to see innate knowledge as though seeing the light of the sun and moon once more.
惟恐传习之不博,而未以重复之为繁也,请裒其所逸者增刻之。
However, I am afraid that the transmission and practice of the doctrine have not been extensive, and I do not believe it is troublesome to republish them.Why not collect the missing sayings and publish an enlarged edition ?”
洪曰:“然师门致知格物之旨,开示来学,学者躬修默悟,不敢以知解承,而惟以实体得,故吾师终日言是而不惮其烦,学者终日听是而不厌其数。
The tenets of the extension of knowledge and the investigation of things of our school were to enlighten those who came to learn.
Students practiced personally and came to realize silently.They dared not seek understanding through intellection but only tried to attain concrete, personal realization.This was why our Teacher spoke all day without feeling troubled and the students listened all day without getting tired of the repetition.
盖指示专一,则体悟日精,几迎于言前,神发于言外,感遇之诚也。
For as his instructions were concentrated, the students' personal realization became increasingly refined.Before he spoke we understood his subtle meaning.After he spoke the spirit manifested itself far beyond his words.This was all due to the sincerity of our gratitude for his influence.
今吾师之没未及三纪,而格言微旨渐觉沦晦,岂非吾党身践之不力,多言有以病之耶?
Now it has not been three decades since the death of our Teacher and it seems that his wise sayings and profound tenets are gradually fading away.Has this bad effect not come about because our group has not practiced them personally with sufficient effort but has talked too much instead ?
学者之趋不一,师门之教不宣也。”
As the tendencies of followers have become diverse, the doctrines of our school have not spread.
乃复取逸稿,采其语之不背者,得一卷。
I therefore took the unpublished material, selected those sayings that are not contradictory, and succeeded in putting them together as one part.
其余影响不真,与文录既载者,皆削之。
Those remaining that do not reflect the true teachings of our Teacher and those already contained in the Wen-lu are all omitted.
幷易中卷为问答语,以付黄梅尹张君增刻之。
I also changed the middle part into question and answer form.I sent them to Mr. Chang, magistrate of Huang - mei, to be published in an enlarged version
庶几读者不以知解承而惟以实体得,则无疑于是录矣。
so that the reader will not seek understanding through intellection but only through concrete, personal realization and that he will have no more doubt about what is contained in this work.
嘉靖丙辰夏四月,门人钱德洪拜书于蕲之崇正书院。
