无狭其所居,无厌其所生。
Do not narrow their dwelling or harass their lives;
夫唯不厌,是以不厌。
and for the very reason that you do not harass them, they will cease to turn from you.
是以圣人自知不自见;自爱不自贵。
Therefore the Sage knows himself but does not show himself. #2 Knows his own value, but does not put himself on high.
故去彼取此。
Truly, he rejects that but takes this.
此两者,或利或害。
Of these two, either may be profitable or unprofitable.
天之所恶,孰知其故﹖
But “Heaven hates what it hates; none can know the reason why”.
是以圣人犹难之。
Wherefore the Sage, too, disallows it.
天之道,不争而善胜,不言而善应,不召而自来,繟然而善谋。
For it is the way of Heaven not to strive but none the less to conquer, not to speak, but none the less to get an answer, not to beckon; yet things come to it of themselves. #2 Heaven is like one who says little, yet none the less has laid his plans.
天网恢恢,疏而不失。
Heaven's net is wide; coarse are the meshes, yet nothing slips through.
