The Master said, "The virtuous will be sure to speak correctly, but those whose speech is good may not always be virtuous.

I will treat him in a manner between that accorded to the chief of the Ji, and that given to the chief of the Meng family." He also said, "I am old; I cannot use his doctrines." Confucius took his departure.
子游問孝。
Zi You asked what filial piety was.
子曰：「君子哉若人！
An esteemer of virtue indeed is this!"
尚德哉若人！」
An esteemer of virtue indeed is this!"
禦人以口給，屢憎於人。
I know not whether he be truly virtuous, but why should he show readiness of the tongue?"
不知其仁，焉用佞？」

The Master said, "I am not so good for that as an old husbandman." He requested also to be taught gardening, and was answered, "I am not so good for that as an old gardener." Fan Chi having gone out, the Master said, "A small man, indeed, is Fan Xu!
子曰：「噫！
Heaven is destroying me!
宰予晝寢。
Zai Yu being asleep during the daytime, the Master said, "Rotten wood cannot be carved; a wall of dirty earth will not receive the trowel.
」丈人曰：「四體不勤，五穀不分。
Zi Lu joined his hands across his breast, and stood before him.
吾未見好德如好色者也。」
I have not seen one who loves virtue as he loves beauty."
遊必有方。」
If he does go abroad, he must have a fixed place to which he goes."
子貢問曰：「孔文子何以謂之文也？
Zi Gong asked, saying, "On what ground did Kong Wen get that title of Wen?" The Master said, "He was of an active nature and yet fond of learning, and he was not ashamed to ask and learn of his inferiors!
如其仁！
Whose beneficence was like his?"
如其仁！」

至則行矣。
A superior man takes office, and performs the righteous duties belonging to it.
唯天為大，唯堯則之。
It is only Heaven that is grand, and only Yao corresponded to it.
君子哉！」
He completes it with sincerity.
This is indeed a superior man."
」子曰：「吾見其居於位也，見其與先生並行也。
He is not one who is seeking to make progress in learning.
子罕言利，与命，与仁。
The subjects of which the Master seldom spoke were: profitableness, and also the appointments of Heaven, and perfect virtue.
达巷党人曰：「大哉孔子！
A man of the village of Da Xiang said, "Great indeed is the philosopher Kong!
