The grass and bushes cleared away, / The ground is ploughed at break of day. A thousand pairs weed, hoe in hand; / They toil in old or new-tilled land. The master comes with all his sons, / The older and the younger ones. They are all strong and stout; / At noon they take meals out. They love their women fair / Who take of them good care. With the sharp plough they wield, / They break the southern field. All kinds of grain they sow / Burst into life and grow, Young shoots without end rise; / The longest strike the eyes. The grain grows lush here and there; / The toilers weed with care. The reapers come around; / The grain’s piled up aground. There’re millions of stacks fine / To be made food or wine For our ancestors’ shrine / And for the rites divine. The delicious food / Is glory of kinghood.
