The words obtained were as follows: “It will benefit the people but will not benefit the ruler.” Lord Wen said, “If it benefits the people, then it will benefit me as well.
天生烝民而樹之君,以利之也,民既利矣,孤必與焉。
That Heaven created the people and set up a ruler for them was for their benefit.
」侍者曰:「命可長也,君胡不為?
If the people are benefited, then their ruler will surely share in it as well.” His attendants said, “If Your Lordship’s life can be extended, why not do so?” “The purpose of my life is to be a shepherd to the people,” replied Lord Wen. “One’s length of life is fixed.
」君曰:「命在牧民,死之短長,時也,民苟利矣,吉孰大焉。
」遂徙於繹。
If the people can be benefited, what could be more auspicious?” He then moved the capital to Yi.
