」孔子曰：「吾未識也。
往者，齊有鮑叔，鄭有子皮，賢者也。
“I’m not acquainted with any,” replied Kongzi, “but in former days there was Bao Shu in Qi and Zipi in Zheng.
」子貢曰：「然則齊無管仲，鄭無子產乎？
They were both worthy men.” “Then there was no Guan Zhong in Qi and no Zichan in Zheng?” asked Zigong.
」子曰：「賜，汝徒知其一，45不知其二。
汝聞進賢為賢耶？
“Si,” said Kongzi, “you know the first thing merely and do not know what follows.
用力為賢耶？
Have you heard that worthiness consists of recommending the worthy?” “Worthiness consists of recommending the worthy?” repeated Zigong.
」子貢曰：「進賢為賢。
」子曰：「然。
“That’s right,” said Kongzi.
吾聞鮑叔之進管仲也，聞子皮之進子產也。
未聞管仲、子產有所進也。」
“I have heard that Bao Shu recommended Guan Zhong and that Zipi recommended Zichan; I have never heard that Guan Zhong or Zichan recommended anyone.
