When Lord Jing saw this, he said to him, “What is this?
Is your stipend insufficient, sir?
Why is your equipage so unseemly?” “Thanks to what Your Lordship has bestowed on me,” Yanzi replied, “I have been able to safeguard the lives of those in the respective branches of my family; and my associates within the state have depended on this for their livelihoods as well.
If I can obtain warm clothes, filling meals, a ramshackle carriage, and some broken-down horses to fulfill my personal needs, that is quite sufficient for me.” When Yanzi went out, Lord Jing ordered Liang Qiuju to deliver a handsome carriage and a team of four horses to him.
Though Liang went and returned three times, Yanzi would not accept them.
Displeased, Lord Jing summoned him forthwith.
When Yanzi arrived, he said, “If you will not accept my gift, sir, then I too will ride no more.” “Your Lordship has ordered me to direct the affairs of the hundred officers,” said Yanzi.
“I am sparing in my use of clothes and food so that I may provide an example for the people of Qi, but in spite of this I still fear that they will be extravagant and have no regard for their behavior.
Now, as for this handsome carriage and team of horses, if the ruler rides in such conveyances and the officers below him do so as well, and the people, with no fine example before them, grow lavish in their clothes and food and have no regard for their behavior, then I will have no means to stop them.” He then refused the carriage and horses.
