其母曰：「他日笞子，未嘗見泣，今泣何也？
His mother said, “You never used to weep when I beat you— why do you weep now?” “In the past, when I offended you and you beat me, the beatings always hurt.
But now your strength has diminished. and you aren’t able to cause me pain. That is why I weep.” Hence, it is said that one who, when his parents are angry with him, remains undisturbed in his mind and composed in his expression and is able to fully acknowledge his fault so as to make his parents feel sympathy for him—such a person belongs to the highest category.
」對曰：「他日俞得罪，笞嘗痛；今母之力衰，不能使痛，是以泣也。
One who, when his parents are angry with him, remains undisturbed in his mind and composed in his expression belongs to the next lower category; and one who, when his parents are angry with him, is disturbed in his mind and discomposed in his expression belongs to the lowest category.
」故曰父母怒之，不作於意，不見於色，深受其罪，使可哀憐，上也；父母怒之，不作於意，不見於色，其次也；父母怒之，作於意，見於色，下也。
Bo Yu 伯俞 (surn. Hán 韓) lived in the early Han and came from the state of Liang 梁.
In versions of this item quoted from Han Shi waizhuan (where it no longer appears), the character for “Yu” is given as 瑜 rather than 俞.
