吾嘗幽處而深思,不若學之速;吾嘗跂而望,不若登高之博見。
I have secluded myself and engaged in meditation, but that method is not as swift as study.
故順風而呼,聲不加疾,而聞者眾;登丘而招,臂不加長,而見者遠。
I have stood on tiptoe and cast my gaze afar, but the view was not as wide as the one I can obtain by climbing to a high place.
故魚乘於水,鳥乘於風,草木乘於時。」
“Thus, one can see that, when one calls out in the same direction as the wind, many will hear, though you do not call more urgently than you did before; and, when you beckon to others from a raised mound, people will see you from afar, though your arms are no longer than before.
In just this way, fish take advantage of the water, birds take advantage of the wind, and growing things take advantage of the season.
