孔子過之,不軾。
When Kongzi passed by the place, he did not bow to the group from the guard rail of his carriage.
子路曰:「禮,過三人則下車,過二人則軾。
Zilu said, “According to the rites, one should descend from one’s carriage when passing by three people and bow from the guard rail when passing two.
今陳修門者人數眾矣,夫子何為不軾?
In this case there are a great many people rebuilding the Chen city wall—why don’t you bow to them from the guard rail?” “I have heard,” said Kongzi, “that when a man’s state perishes and he does not foresee it, this is a failure of wisdom.
」孔子曰:「丘聞之,國亡而不知不智;知而不爭不忠;忠而不死不廉。
If he foresees it but does not strive to prevent it, this is a failure of loyalty.
今陳修門者,不能行一於此,丘故不為軾也。」
If he is loyal but does not die, this is a failure to be upright.
In this case, none of those repairing the gate were able to practice even so much as one of those virtues, so I did not bow to them from the guard rail.
