以為夫義之不立，名之不著，是士之恥也，故殺身以遂其行。
They felt that the failure to perform noble deeds and the failure to attain a glorious name is a disgrace to a man of spirit, so they submitted to death in order to fulfill their aims.
From this we can see that poverty and base position are no disgrace to a man-of-service.
因此觀之，卑賤貧富，非士之恥也，夫士之所恥者，天下舉忠而士不與也，舉信而士不與焉，舉廉而士不與焉，三者在乎身，名傳於後世，與日月並而不息，雖無道之世，不能污焉。
What such a man finds disgraceful is to be aware that his name does not appear among those of the loyal of the realm, among those of the trustworthy of the realm, or among those of the incorruptible of the realm.
When a person is known to possess these three qualities, then his name will be transmitted to later ages and will be as bright and inextinguishable as the sun and the moon; and, even if the age is full of wickedness, he will not be tainted by it.
