When Lord Xian made Li Ji his chief consort, the state fell prey to troubles, and Hu Tu stopped coming to court, claiming illness as a pretext.
In the sixth year of his reign, Lord Xian listened to slander and ordered the death of the crown prince.
Before he died, the crown prince had a man speak to Hu Tu for him, saying, “Our lord is advanced in years, and the state is beset with troubles—if you will go and serve his lordship, then I shall be able to accept the death conferred on me without regret.” He bowed twice, touching his head to the ground, and died.
Hu Tu resumed his service to Lord Xian. Three years later, when Lord Xian died, Hu Tu took leave of the court officers, saying, “The task entrusted to me by the crown prince has now come to an end.
Rather than live on in this disordered world, I shall die and present my report to the crown prince.” He then returned home and killed himself.
