The king summoned Fen Yang to court.
Fen Yang put himself into the custody of a man of Chengfu and had the man deliver him into the king’s presence.
“The order went out from my mouth and into your ear,” said the king.
“Who informed Jian?” “I informed him,” said Fen Yang.
“In the beginning, Your Majesty’s orders to me were ‘Serve Jian as you would serve us.’ I am incapable; I am not able to change allegiances, so, acting in accordance with the first order, I informed him.
I regretted it afterwards, but it was by then too late.” “Why have you dared to come here?” asked the king.
“To fail to respond to a summons after having failed to carry out a mission,” said Fen Yang, “would only have redoubled my offense.
I would have had no place to flee to.” The king pardoned him.
